Matthew Bourne's The Red Shoes returns to London for 2019 Christmas season
Based on the film by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger and the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale Music by Bernard Herrmann A beloved fairy tale and Academy Award-winning movie, The Red Shoes has seduced audiences and inspired generations of dancers with its tale of obsession, possession and one girl's dream to be the greatest dancer in the world. Victoria Page lives to dance but her ambitions become a battleground between the two men who inspire her passion. "Britain’s most succesful choreographer will blow your mind with his sheer imagination, wit and brio" THE TIMES Matthew Bourne’s magical adaptation is set to a new score arranged by Terry Davies using the mesmerising music of golden-age Hollywood composer, Bernard Herrmann (most famous for his collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles) and played live by the New Adventures Orchestra, with sumptuous set and costume designs by Lez Brotherston, Paule Constable (lighting) and Paul Groothuis (sound). An intoxicating drama where life imitates art with fateful consequences; The Red Shoes will dazzle your senses and break your heart. Excellent dancers , but music was nothing special

Beautifully constructed, inventive, fluid, fun, near-perfect. Excellent dancers, but could flesh out relationships with people, places, things, ideas more to develop the dynamism. Design brilliant.

This was a fantastic production that actually exceeded my expectations, although my daughter and I had been looking forward to it for a long time. The ballet was beautiful , the story line a deep, thought provoking one albeit with many moments of humour. At one point the audience were drawn unwittingly into applause, at the end of what was essentially a ballet within a ballet. A tantalising Bourne twist. The costumes were sumptuous , the special effects incredible, at one point making me feel that I really was on a rainy pavement in Paris. We loved it, our only disappointment being that we had to go home instead of watching it all over again.

The most amazing piece of choreography I think I've ever seen. Most beautifully danced. I never thought anything would be able to top Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake but for me this did

Dancers great, the story as a dance excellent, understandable and interesting. The game of the scenery, a backdrop goes into the other scenery, is just great. Ashley Shaw looks like the dancer from the movie. With the live orchestra a round thing. Matthew Bourne has again shown that he is one of the top of the ballet choreographers.

I felt that it took a bit of time to really get going, but once it did - Wow! The narrative was crystal clear (no need to have known the film beforehand) and some splendid performances - Ashley Shaw was really moving - and it was fun to see Dominic North playing the lead male ballet Dancer - (oddly, he wasn't in the programme cast list as playing it at all....) - but very funny, and somewhat outside his usual range of roles... All in all a splendid evening, typically full of Matthew Bourne inventiveness and tiny little details - definitely will have to go again , to see all the things I missed first time round...

Really enjoyed the show and I throughly the staging was excellent! I didn't know the story before, and deliberately didn't look it up, so I didn't follow the narrative as much as I wanted to be able to. Great show though.
