Scheherazade & Chopiniana Tickets

London Ballet & Dance
The Abay Kazakh State Opera and Ballet Theatre present Scheherazade and Chopiniana.
Kazakhstan’s oldest theatre, the Abay Kazakh State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, is embarking on major international tours during the 2019/20 season and making its UK debut with the one-act ballets Scheherazade and Chopiniana. Since its establishment in 1934, this theatre has been associated with an array of Russian and international icons, including the great ballet dancer Galina Ulanova, composer Sergey Prokofiev and opera star Larisa Aleksandrovskaya. Over the years it has promoted its cultural heritage with Kazakh operas and ballets and has staged masterpieces of Russian and Western European repertoire. Michel Fokine’s search for new forms was expressed in Chopiniana, a work that grew out of his frustration with traditional ballet. At the time it was revolutionary for its cross-cutting actions, unity of music, choreography and scenography, and abundant narratives depicting Chopin’s life and work. The piece was later renamed Les Sylphides. Fokine went on to transmit his unlimited sense of form to Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, which embraces erotic and non-classical balletic movement. The new piece raised eyebrows yet became wildly successful. The outstanding cast of the Abay Opera and Ballet Theatre will delight ballet audiences with its dedication, skill and non-conformist reimagining of world-famous ballet repertoire.

Chopinaria - not the best possible performance Second - Scheherezade - perfect

    Really enjoyed it

Technically very good, but not impressed with choreography. Lack of live orchestra was disappointing.

A pretty decent show with some very elegant and beautiful dancing, nice costumes. The choreography wasn't particularly complex and the introduction was a bit longer than needed perhaps, but overall a nice evening out with family and a great venue.

Chopiniana had unambitious choreography and flawed execution. The choice of operata music and the absence of an orchestra did not help the performance. Scheherazade was a lot better: better choreography, better costumes and better synchronisation with the music. The management of the Coliseum theatre was poor: queuing was chaotic and the security checks were slipshod.

We were in Stalls Row L and we were very irritated by the number of people taking photos as its very distracting firstly to have screens lighting up all around and then for the ushers to come rushing backwards and forwards with flash lights. Difficult problem I know. The music quality was very good and the execution of the ballet was very precise. I was not overly excited by the first act. It was harder to understand what was going on. The 2nd act was much better and easier to understand. But well done to the ballet company for its confident delivery. Getting drinks was very easy and we found a side ledge before the performance and a small table in the interval which was nice.
