London Play
A Kind of People by Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti
“In this country, you go as far as they let you.” Friday night on the fringes of the city and someone’s having a party. It seems like a laugh, but not everyone’s having fun. Gary and Nicky have been together since school. Gary’s going for a promotion so he can get his family out of their council flat and give Nicky everything she deserves. Anjum and Mo are used to aiming for the best. And doing whatever it takes to get it. Gary’s sister Karen is more interested in having a life than fighting for any cause. Mark is just…always there. And Victoria, Victoria wants to dance with somebody… Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti‘s new play, set amidst a contemporary British community, asks how it’s possible to get on when the odds are stacked against you. “It’s a good place. Keep watching and one day it’ll be ours.” Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti‘s previous work at the Royal Court includes: Khandan. She has written extensively for stage, screen and radio. Her work includes Elephant, Behzti/Dishonour(Birmingham Rep), the latter won the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize; and the feature film Everywhere and Nowhere. “Bhatti writes excellently…she also creates complex characters.” The Guardian The Big Idea: Post-Show Talk | Tue 7 Jan Writer Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti in conversation with Royal Court Young Agitators. This event is free with a ticket to that evening’s performance.

After a quiet start it became really absorbing. We both thoroughly enjoyed it and felt as if we had received good value. The acting was good and the simple set was clever. A little dark but makes you ponder.

Very thought provoking. The acting was excellent and intense. So many issues for this multicultural society to deal with. We ALL have a lot of self examination to do.

Interesting view on hidden racist attitudes amongst close friends and family and the effect on relationships.

Very well written play. Very dynamic. You don't feel like it lasted 90mn. The actor are really really really good. The range of emotion they are able to make you feel is quite impressive. I do recommend it. The character and their demons are very relatable and not far fetched at all!

This was an absolutely excellent play, powerfully performed, which gripped the audience wholeheartedly through highs of joy and laughter to lows of shock and despair. I would definitely watch again.
