London Play
Noel Coward's Present Laughter returns to the London stage in a new revival starring Andrew Scott at the Old Vic
‘This is Coward at his peak... the dialogue sparkles, the laughs come easily and Alex Jennings as Essendine holds the audience in the palm of his hand. A blissful night.' - Observer 'Terrific treats. A top-notch cast headed by an actor at the peak of his comic powers. Splendid performances all round. A singularly successful evening.' - Independent At the centre of his own universe sits matinee idol Garry Essendine: suave, hedonistic and too old, says his wife, to be having numerous affairs. His line in harmless, infatuated debutantes is largely tolerated but playing closer to home is not. Just before he escapes on tour to Africa the full extent of his misdemeanours is discovered. And all hell breaks loose. You have reached a moment in life when a little restraint would be becoming. You are no longer a debonair, irresponsible juvenile. You are an eminent man advancing, with every sign of reluctance, into middle age. Noël Coward’s Present Laughter premiered in the early years of the Second World War just as such privileged lives were threatened with fundamental social change. Staged at the National for the first time, with Alex Jennings as Garry.

So fun! Andrew Scott was a passionate flurry of gorgeousness - I had to meter my blinking when he was on stage as not to miss a single, edible expression. The chap in the audience whose attention getting sneeze, caused me to miss 4 syllables of dialogue will never be forgiven. Indira Varma was a comet, blazing, dazzling, devouring everything in her path - including me (this note is from the grave). Shout out to that angel who most masterfully curated the music to add spark and joy to an already spectacular show. Bravo all!

The clever dialogue of Noel Coward’s Present Laughter delivered with passion and credulity. Andrew Scott amazing and totally deserving of the standing ovations.Whole ensemble great, particularly loved Sophie Thompson and Indira Varma. Lots of laughter! Go see it!

Something went really wrong here. I couldn't find any ticket reference anywhere in my email. I called London Theatre Direct who said to contact the venue. I did and they didn't have any record of me either. So we didn't go. Very disappointing.

One of the best plays I have ever seen. Andrew Scott was outstanding. We sat on the second row of the stalls and the sublime quality of his and his fellow performers was a privilege to witness

The plot was so thin it was joke, bit of a lovey's play really

Surprisingly 'relevant/topical' even though it was written 80 years ago

A fantastic production and Andrew Scott demonstrated what a versatile and brilliant actor he is. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Interesting and hilarious updating of this classic farce. Coward would have been oleased, I believe. Excellent cast and set design.

One of the best and most enjoyable productions of a fantastically written play I have seen in years. The quality of the acting and dialogue were superb... the set simple but effective, the engagement with the audience excellent.
